Loan Tracker© is an Excel (3.0) worksheet designed to provide users with in-depth information on loans and should be of particular interest to people interested in refinancing loans at today's lower interest rates, or those who would like to see how early repayment of a loan would affect the total interest they pay over the lifetime of the loan.

  12. Loan Tracker/2© is a version of Loan Tracker© used for calculating loans with bimonthly payments.

  16. •    Create an amortization schedule for any loan from 1 to 360 months (30 years).

  18. •    Calculate the total amount that will be paid back and the interest portion of the payments.

  20. •    Calculate the pay off date.

  22. •    Track all additional payments that you apply toward the principle, calculate the interest savings, the new pay-off date, and the number of months the loan will be paid off early.

  24.     Most loan programs provide some mix of the first two items, but the latter two features are unique (at least based on my survey).

  27. A Quick Guide to Using Loan Tracker©:

  29.     To use the program, enter loan information into the fields with red text only.  The program will create the amortization schedule, calculate the monthly payment, total payback, and total of the interest payments.

  31.     If you make additional payments on the principle to reduce your interest expense and the life of the loan, enter data into the "Additional Principle" column for the appropriate month.  The total pay-off and the interest payment totals will be updated, the additional payments will be totaled, and the interest saved will be calculated as will the number of months that the loan will be paid off early.

  33.     The program was designed to do "what-if" scenarios.  Experiment with different pay-off strategies, such as lump principle payments, regular additional principle payments, or matching the principle of each payment with an equal additional principle payment.  The program automatically calculates the interest savings and the impact on loan life.

  35.   If you only have a loan that is for less than 30 years, you can delete the unneeded rows to conserve on file space and speed up both the load and recalculation times.  To do so, just set up the loan with the full term, move down the worksheet until you find the last date row with an date showing, then delete from the next row down to row 370.  Make sure you edit a copy, not the original!
